Monoglycerides & Diglycerides: Same Killer, Different Name

monoglycerides and diglycerides

The public apparently caught on that partially hydrogenated oils were unhealthy; so now the FDA requires labeling for trans fat content, BUT only if it contains more than .49g per serving, AND only if it comes from triglycerides! Not too difficult to get around that rule, simply decrease the serving size, or disguise the trans fats somehow.

Of course, the big food industries don’t want us to know that they’re poisoning us, so they exploited the loophole. They started using monoglycerides and diglycerides, so they aren’t required to label the food as containing trans fats.

Why avoid trans fats? We’ll go into more detail at a later time, but trans fats affect your cholesterol and increase the risks of strokes, diabetes and heart troubles. With the food industry hiding trans fats in our foods, is it any wonder that so many kids today have diabetes and are having heart attacks?

What’s really upsetting is that the food industries, these companies we are TRUSTING with the lives of our children, obviously know that these additives and ingredients are not good for us! Otherwise, why would they hide the trans fats by disguising it?

That’s what they’re doing! Monoglycerides and Diglycerides are still manufactured, just like partially hydrogenated oils, and they still contain dangerous trans fats. Trans fats that aren’t required to be reported on the labels. Trans fats that are still hazardous to your health. Trans fats that are causing our children to develop diabetes and heart attacks.

This isn’t natural! Our children should not be this unhealthy! We can do something about this!! Admittedly, it’s hard to find foods that don’t contain monoglycerides or diglycerides. But we CAN do it!

Before buying anything, read the label; don’t just look for “0% trans fat” or “0g trans fat”. You can’t trust that! Remember, they can claim 0% trans fat as long as it contains less than .49 g per serving. Look at the ingredients on the label, not just the nutrition facts. If it contains monoglycerides or diglycerides, put it back on the shelf.

If you want to be proactive, write a letter to the food manufacturers. Let them know how pissed off you are that they are poisoning your kids!

I just started a food challenge to try to eliminate some of this stuf from my diet and to, simply, become more aware. I was very surprised to see how often these show up on ingredients labels. I’m enjoying your site…very important inormation.

I have successfully replaced all of my favorite foods with healthy versions. I purchase Simply Peanut butter (lower in fat than the Jif junk and it contains natural and healthy oils) I eat 90% organic and I refuse to buy products with a grocery list of ingredients. I purchase organic and if I cant find organic, I read the labels until I find short and simple lists of ingredients! Its not as hard as people think. The less the ingredients the better. When a products ingredient list takes up the entire side of the box/can/jar then why buy it? Obviously is CRAP. Read what you put into your bodies and buy organic for your kids as well. There are so many delicious foods you can cook and so many amazing deserts/snacks you can create for you and your family.

Amazing passion. I was just wondering where you initially got the information that monoglycerides and diglycerides are linked to transfats? I am trying to find more concrete information on this topic so if you have any resources please let me know!

I found your posting interesting. Are you aware that there is an alternative to mono & di’s? It is a “rice bran extrct” that is available as natural or certified organic. At this time the USDA is accepting “public comments” about the allowance to use mono & di’s in organic foods vs. using “rice bran extract”. Your opinion can be voiced here.

hey this is not true. fda requires to account for trans fatty acids from all the sources, it is fats, oils, mono and diglycerides, etc., and for a calculation basis are expressed stoichiometrically as triglycerides.

  10. juan jo on January 20, 2015 at 1:54 am

“expressed as triglycerides” is a chemical term meaning “add all up and pretend it is all triglycerides”

I recently ate Healthy Choice fudge bars drank diet A&W Root Beer and also ate sugar free diet Jello pudding the next day I woke up with blisters all through the inside of my mouth. I called my sister who is a nurse and she told me that the aspartame which is in every one of those things is very bad for me so tonight I had a skinny cow fudge bar and that had monoglycerides and sorbitol in it think I’m going to have to change my diet that’s for sure!!!

I’m pls.to read this piece on monoglycerides. It’s very alarming to me,I never thought the food company does dubious things to mislead consumers. Thanks

There MUST be more regulations on foods we eat daily. It’s all about their pockets to these corporations, once they have YOUR money
Governments Must be more proactive, in legislating safe food rergulations.

  18. Celine Federici on January 27, 2016 at 3:48 pm

Good article except for last sentence. Is is necessary to say PO’d ( spelled out) and is that the best way to make your point to the manufacturers to remove this “ingredient”. Annoying and insulting anyone rarely if ever gets the results one is looking for.

Very astute connection, I know they have been around for decades. If they are an emulsifier, they are replacing eggs or lecithin. Or glycerin in some cases. I’d rather have eggs

KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID , What they forgot is research is now at a key press what’s hidden will come to the light. Thanks for the warning, m as ny appreciate thid thread.

There are many varieties of mono- and di- glycerides. They may or may not contain trans fat. To say all mono- and di- glycerides are trans fat is as wrong as saying all oils are trans fat.

OMG I eat allot of candy. One early morning I grab from my night stand a Mary Jane and I read the label never did it and decided to research he label found your website so glad no more Mary Jane for me. Been eating them all my life. No more!!!Thank God for you explaininG this…

  29. David on June 3, 2017 at 7:33 am

Trans fats are one thing. You go to hysterics rather quickly without explaining where certain mono and diglycerides come from. There are derivatives of these that come from vegetables. If you are going to raise “alarm” for attention, you best go into way more detail. It’s as if you come out with “water can kill you” without explaining what exactly are the circumstances that can make it dangerous.

  30. Maria on June 15, 2017 at 11:43 pm

Thanks for sharing this info, the devil is really working over but God is still in control and He want us to go back the plant base diet.

  31. Youngdc11 on September 16, 2017 at 10:36 pm

I read a couple of posts here about consuming sorbitol. Be very careful with that one. Because eaten in excess, it “will” act as a laxative.
I found out the hard way.

  32. Jayne on November 4, 2017 at 12:31 pm

Not all monodiglycerides contain trans fats. It’s still important to read labels. Of course its best to try to eat as naturally as possible but sometimes we modern humans have to eat something processed even as minimally as possible. Not everything, in moderation too, should be vilified. We want to be healthy but still enjoy living instead of being panicked every moment about eating.

  33. Clover on January 10, 2018 at 2:52 am

“Made up in part of fatty acids, mono- and diglycerides may contain trans fats, either when manufactured in a lab or, if they come from an animal or vegetable source, when exposed to heat for processing into packaged and prepared foods.”

  36. Josh on May 16, 2018 at 6:33 pm

Your are a fool!!! .49 G of trans fats adds up to NOTHING.

  37. Sarah Olson on May 19, 2018 at 6:22 am

According to the math class I took in first grade Josh, NOTHING is 0.0, not .49.

  38. bubs on June 27, 2018 at 12:15 pm

And it’s .49g per serving, Josh. What if the serving size is 5 grams? That’s 10% transfats.

  39. Judy Strauss on September 19, 2018 at 8:59 pm

Great article, and comments except for one or two. I agree with you dear author and especially with Irini. I agree with her ideas and I am doing the same exact thing. Organic all the way. Read every single ingredient all of the time. Avoid mono & di-g and avoid soy, maltodextrin, artificial flavors and colors, avoid brown rice syrup, and mebbe one other I forgot at the moment. These damn ingredients are everywhere. It’s not easy at times and it is very doable!
