Excitotoxins…The Not So Exciting Toxin

You know what I think is funny? I don’t mean funny, ha ha, I mean funny idiotic. So many children are having problems with hyperactivity, brain disorders and learning disabilities…so what do we do? We put the children on drugs…which have their own set of side effects!

Why isn’t anyone doing something about the cause of these issues? That’s what I want to know!

OK, so now you’re wondering what I’m talking about, right? They’re called excitotoxins and they are products added to our food, usually to enhance the taste. Numerous studies have been done that show how bad these excitotoxins are for us, especially our children, but the FDA turns a blind eye. As soon as the public finds out that they are a danger, the food industry simply gives it a different name.

Who does this help? Certainly not the families who have to pay for the expensive medical visits and treatments! No, the food industry doesn’t want us to know these chemicals are dangerous to us because that’s how they make their money. And, the medical industry doesn’t want to keep us healthy because they would lose billions of dollars!!

Who cares if it puts the middle and lower class families in dire straits?? As long as THEY are making money, they don’t care. It’s up to us as PARENTS to pay attention to what we are feeding our kids.

What are Excitotoxins?

So what exactly are excitotoxins, anyway? MSG and Aspartame are the most widely known. I’m sure you remember when facts about MSG originally began popping up, about 15 years ago, give or take a few years? It was squelched soon after that…but, MSG is used even now. Aspartame is the sweetener used in Equal and Nutrasweet.

What are the dangers of Excitotoxins?

To understand the dangers of Excitotoxins, you have to understand a little of how they work. They enhance the sense of taste by stimulating inactive brain cells; these brain cells get overstimulated or overexcited, and die within an hour of stimulation.

In adults, excitotoxins have been linked to neurological diseases such as ALS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s Disease.

Since our brain cells become more active as we grow, the effects of excitotoxins are even more detrimental in babies and children. They are known to be a factor in dyslexia cases, schizophrenia, autism, seizures, learning disorders…the list just goes on and on!

Excitotoxins in disguise…

As I said above, once the public becomes aware of a dangerous additive, the food industry disguises it. So before you buy anything, check for any of these ingredients on the labels:

  • Hydrolyzed vegetable protein
  • Sodium caseinate
  • Calcium caseinate
  • Yeast extract
  • Soy protein isolate
  • Textured protein
  • Natural flavoring

All of these are just other terms for excitotoxins. Remember, the food industry is only interested in lining their own products! They don’t care if our children are killed in the process! Please, PLEASE! ALWAYS CHECK THE INGREDIENTS!!
