ADHD: A Mass Hysteria Marketing Ploy

I’ve always been complimented on how well behaved my children are. Because I have 5 of them, people are always astounded when they sit quietly at the dinner table in the restaurant, or walk right next to the cart in the store. Several times, we have gone to pay our dinner bill only to be told that someone had already taken care of it, because our children were well behaved. Even more recently, we were clothes shopping with our children and someone paid for their clothes because they behaved so well.

I attribute this in part to the diet I feed them. I have always wanted to instill better dietary habits than what I have…5 years ago, I was living on a diet of Munchos and Mountain Dew. Was I overweight? NO! I weighed 110 pounds. Even though that wasn’t my problem, I knew that I didn’t want my kids to eat like I did.

As a result, I have always tried to feed them healthy foods. They hardly ever get soda (we’re talking maybe 2 or 3 sodas a YEAR) and daily snacks consist of applesauce, apples, pears, peaches and wheat crackers. Cakes and cookies are rare treats, usually limited to birthdays, holidays and special occasions.

Now I have been rewarded with healthy, calm and well-behaved children. None of them are overweight, and none of them have the dreaded (and fictitious, I may add) “disease” of ADHD. I came across an article today in Natural News titled “The ADHD Scam and the Mass Drugging of Schoolchildren.” The article was written in May of 2008 but even now has practical applications for our society.

I wanted to add my comments to the author’s, and try to help Mike Adams spread the word. Every quote in this article is taken directly from the article by Mike Adams on Natural News.

First, the commentary discusses a study in which scientists claim that the brains of children inflicted with this ADHD disease are underdeveloped; what they neglected to include in their conclusions was that the children’s brains they looked at had been on the pharmaceutical equivalent to crack or heroin for several years…(of course I’m talking about the drugs the doctors prescribe for ADHD).

Interestingly enough, 2 days before that another study found that these same drugs do nothing for children’s behavior…you read it right, THE DRUGS PRESCRIBED FOR TREATMENT OF ADHD DO NOT WORK.

This is interesting to think about…in fact, I have a brother who is supposedly afflicted with ADHD. One time, about 9 or 10 years ago, my parents went out of town and left my brothers with me for over a month. During that time, my brother did not have his prescription. HIS BEHAVIOR WASN’T ANY DIFFERENT. I, obviously, had been around him both on and off his meds and there wasn’t a shred of difference in how hyper he was.

What they DO do is stunt children’s growth. Now, if you take that fact into effect with the underdeveloped brains they found in the other study, those scientists SHOULD have been able to conclude that the drugs are causing the problem, not this so-called “disease”.

Mike brings up an interesting point about ADHD:

In addition, notice that they did not do this study before children started being dosed with the drugs. They did not say 20 years ago: “Oh, wow! Suddenly children are having this so-called disease ‘ADHD.'” Let’s stick them under a machine and see if there is anything wrong with their brains. They did not do that because if they had they would have found there was no difference.

Can you see yet that this isn’t a real sickness?? This is just another way for the food industry and pharmaceutical companies to line their pockets! As the title of this article states, this mass hysteria about ADHD is nothing more than a marketing ploy. The pharmaceutical companies wanted to sell a drug, and they bribed enough people to get it done.

And now, it’s not enough for children to be on the drugs. Pharmaceutical companies are now expanding into the untapped market of adult ADHD “sufferers”.

They cannot tell the truth so they have to keep coming up with new lies to try to market this to more people. First, it was just a children’s disorder. Then the drug companies realized they could sell this same speed drug to adults. I mean think about it. Children are only a small part of the total market.

Do you know how they diagnose adults with ADHD? They ask questions. Yeah…I wouldn’t be too happy if they told me I had a “disease” without performing a series of diagnostic tests…but, I know what you’re thinking. It’s a “mental disease” not a physical one…not so! Remember that study claims that there IS a physical manifestation of ADHD: 3-year delay in brain development.

Aside from that, here’s another interesting point.

We could cure children of this so-called behavioral disorder by doing two things — making the children healthy and making education a lot more interesting. These children do not have attention deficit problems. You set those young boys down in front of a Wii or an X-box or a Playstation and they can pay attention for about 12 hours straight. They do not even pee or eat.

If you have a child that has been diagnosed with this fake sickness, you know this. If these kids had an attention deficiency issue, they would not be able to stay focused on anything for a long period of time, let alone stay still for that long.

I read somewhere that 2/3 of the children with ADHD are undiagnosed…does that make any sense to you? If that many children are undiagnosed, then how do they know they have ADHD? They can’t count an unknown quantity!!

When they say too many children are going untreated, what they mean is not enough children have bought our drugs — not enough parents have given in. Not enough prescriptions have been written.

When they say that more children need treatment that is what they mean. They need to sell more drugs. They have managed to change the language. They have managed to phrase all of this so that their marketing campaigns sound like compassionate public health campaigns. Oh, we care about these children so much that we have to sell them our over-priced monopoly prescription drugs that used to be sold as street drugs and would, in fact, get you arrested for a felony if you sold them to a child.

So how was the industry able to pull off such a massive mass hysteria marketing ploy? Easy…the hyperactivity of our children has become an issue…but it’s not due to any “disease” sweeping our nation. Instead, it’s a direct result of all the artificial colorings such as Red #40. It’s because of the processed foods containing MSG, BHA and BHT and other preservatives. It’s because of all the refined sugar we are feeding to our kids.

As with Mike, it is my hope that we can spread the word about the killing agents being put in the food that is marketed to kids. Something needs to be done, and it’s obviously not going to happen unless we, as consumers, stop feeding the poison to our kids.

As an 24 year old adult with ADD I can tell you that it does exist, Ive had a good diet in my lifetime, and only went on meds for a very short time.
I can honestly say that it does exist, I can feel it, imagine years before dyslexia was understood, people with dysliexia would be called stupid or “retarded” because they couldn’t write or read properly, now we understand why.
With ADD its extremely difficult to express how it affects you, which in turn can lead to damaging relationships, friendships, work, etc…
There is also alot of positivity from it, from being open minded, constantly thinking outside the box (usually due to focusing on something else), highly creative and many more.
One other overlooked thing is ADD (or ADHD) in adults, we only focused on kids because we pay attention to our kids behaviors more than we do of ourselves or other adults, another reason its overlooked is because when kid with ADD reaches puberty two things can happen to ADD, its slows down where its no longer affecting every day life or it gets twice as worse and continues into their adult life.
Adult-ADD is usually passed off as a personality trait, but I assure you it is not, I ado agree that it is over prescribed, but does not change the fact that it exists.
Also just noticed this article is 5 years old but netherless heres an opinion from someone who as ADD.
I respect your decision to protect your children but paranoia can damage your children too, also just because your children may not have ADD does not mean that it doesnt exist for everyone else.

I hope you realize that ADHD isn’t a fake disease that is caused by sugar. Many people, such as yourself, think that it is because it can cause a type of high from sugar but like any other drug it will cause you to crash. When in fact Hyperactive ADHD doesn’t have a crash because it is not a fake disease that can turn off. Yes, it may be over diagnosed, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t real. By the way, one of the methods for diagnosing the disease is to look at the frontal lobe, which are proven to be smaller. And I repeat this is a tool used for diagnosing, which means the person has not yet been on any drugs which could change the size of the frontal lobe. Finally, you blame sugar for causing ADHD, well then how do you explain the inattentive type where it looks like the child is paying attention, when in fact they are not since they cannot focus. This type doesn’t involve children jumping around but rather they can be quiet. Essentially your arguments get knocked down simply by focusing on one if the types of ADHD–inattentive.
